CITY MAN ADMITS KILLING ESTRANGED WIFE.(CAPITAL REGION)

A city man accused of killing his estranged wife in October pleaded guilty to murder Tuesday after admitting that he stabbed her 36 times so he could hawk her jewelry to buy crack.

Luis Velez, 34, of 27 Clare Ave., faces 20 years to life in state prison in the plea deal made before Albany County Judge Thomas A. Breslin.

He will be sentenced Jan. 27.

Prosecutor Dave Rossi said the couple had been having trouble for several months before the killing occurred. Velez had pawn shop ticket stubs in his pockets when police found him hiding in a friend's closet.
