Vic: Truck swimmers make stop in Melbourne

MELBOURNE, April 16 AAP - A team of ambitious fundraisers made a stopover in Melbourne
today, on their way to swimming 6,500km around Australia.

The group set off from Geraldton, Western Australia on April 3 and will continue to
swim in a fibreglass pool on the back of a semi-trailer until they arrive in Sydney on
April 21.

Group members swim against an elasticised cord anchored to one end of the pool.

They hope to raise funds for a program to prevent children drowning, while passing
through 45 towns and cities.

Geraldton councillor Chris Gabelish said he came up with the idea after watching the
Pan-Pacific swimming titles. He believed childhood drowning was a cause that deserved
attention.

"For me this is the most preventable cause of death for kids under five," Mr Gabelish said.

The final leg, finishing at Sydney's Town Hall, will be completed by former swimming
champion Samantha Riley.
